Lessons

How do online maths lessons work?

Lessons run on a video call with a shared whiteboard, so pupil and tutor write on the same page in real time. You need a laptop, desktop or tablet with a camera and microphone. A stylus helps but isn't essential.

Is online tuition as good as face-to-face?

For maths it often works better. The shared whiteboard keeps every worked example, there's no travel time, and pupils can choose from more tutors than live nearby.

How long is each lesson and how often?

Lessons are one hour. Most pupils have one lesson a week at a regular time. Some add a second lesson in the weeks before prelims or the final exam.

Do you teach groups?

No. All lessons are one-to-one, so every lesson is planned around one pupil's gaps.

Which courses do you teach?

National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Maths, Higher Applications of Maths, Higher and Advanced Higher Physics, GCSE Maths, IB Maths, and first-year university maths. See all courses.

Do you only teach pupils in Scotland?

No. Lessons are online, so pupils anywhere in the UK can join. Most pupils are in Scotland because Saba specialises in the Scottish courses.

The free assessment

What happens in the free assessment?

A 30‑minute video call. Your child works through a few short questions at their level and talks through their thinking. Afterwards you receive a written plan of which topics are secure, which are shaky and which haven't been met yet.

Do we have to book lessons after the assessment?

No. The assessment and the plan are free, and there's no obligation.

Should my child prepare for the assessment?

No preparation is needed. It helps if they have a recent test, homework or prelim paper to hand, but it isn't required.

Safeguarding

Is the tutor checked to work with children?

Yes. Saba is a member of the PVG Scheme run by Disclosure Scotland, and is registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.

Does a parent need to be present?

For pupils under 16, a parent or carer should be at home during lessons. Parents are welcome to sit in.

Fees and booking

How much do lessons cost?

From £40 an hour for National 5 and GCSE, £45 for Higher and £55 for Advanced Higher. Blocks of 10 lessons paid in advance save 10%. See all fees.

What if we need to cancel a lesson?

Give at least 24 hours' notice and the lesson is moved or refunded at no charge. Later cancellations are charged in full.

When is the best time to start?

Between August and October, before new topics build on old gaps. It's rarely too late, though. From March, lessons focus on the topics worth the most marks and on exam technique.
